In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
