When Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Viral Photo Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous local residents, heard loud noises ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and there was nothing visible,” she explains. Exiting her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, talking to a duo who had rushed up the slope in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one moving in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running towards something that surely every instinct would signal you to move in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many acts of valour in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews caring for numerous the injured.

Local Reaction and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the scene of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. “There have been so many powerful stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a mayor.

“These individuals demonstrate dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous beaches safe for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be commended.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have seen in the midst of such hatred.”
