The Reform UK leader Accuses Educators of ‘Poisoning Our Kids’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts within weeks a Reform UK election victory, accusing them of “poisoning our kids” by instructing students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and Caucasian students are perpetrators.
During an event for a private US Christian college, Farage outlined his perspective on British schools, stating that the “Marxist left” had “now in control of our education system”.
“I’m anticipating a walkout by educators very quickly after winning the next general election,” he remarked in response to questions.
“They are poisoning our kids. They are telling them to feel guilt about their nation. They inform little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is oppressed and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They are dividing us, instead of fostering unity. They promote this harmful mindset.”
In response to Farage’s claims, Daniel Kebede dismissed the idea that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. Kebede noted that any strikes must relate to teachers’ terms and conditions, and questioned whether the party would target these right after taking office.
“Farage has built his political career on dog-whistle politics and now, similar to other figures, he is targeting educators and their organizations for a conflict,” Kebede stated.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. Neither I nor our union – advocate such divisive theories as he claims … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, including education … and he would be a disaster for education and children.”
The party, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has provided limited specifics on a proposed education policy and seems not to have appointed an education spokesperson.
However, his comments suggested the party would overhaul the educational framework. Farage declared: “We face an enormous task with education – truly monumental. And, it won’t happen quickly; it will take us years, years to turn this around.”
He stated that younger generations are receptive to critical thinking, but older youth were “completely lost”.
Honoring a conservative activist, Farage said: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to educate individuals that multiple perspectives exist and you make up your own mind rather than what’s happening now where views are labeled good or bad. It’s a massive job in both Britain and America.”
Reform has previously clashed with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a cheap imitation”.
Farage has accused Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … an individual intent that our children should be poisoned at school, their minds should be poisoned about everything to do with this country” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate youth opposed to his party.
Almost one million people work in schools in the UK, about half of whom are teachers and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The major education union has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in recent years led to significant interruptions in schools and millions of days of lost learning for students.
At the US event, Farage also pledged to help spread the online educational material of the Christian college in the UK. He stated organizations like it were “part of the fightback”, adding that: “I mean this. I will help garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of youth to your online courses. I pledge this tonight and I’ll do that.”
The institution, a religious educational establishment, offers free courses. Its website states: “A scientific, literary, theological, political, and moral education is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. The college furnishes these excellent programs for free to all who wish to learn.”
