The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
