Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Selection in English Ashes Team

England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's condition.

The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.

In those games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.

At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the probable choice.

Alternative Choices Considered

Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be brought into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.

But the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the series.

In July, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”

“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
