Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Attack

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
