Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "critical" category.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times above healthy limits.

Fireworks Ban and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional government petitioned the highest court to seek a modification of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Despite concerns of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the request, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be ignited during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in their urban centers on pollutants traveling from India following the events.

Chronic Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have remained as a serious problem for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the amount of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak levels ever documented in Beijing, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Contamination Sources

This crisis in the city is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, creating toxic pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as colder air arrives.

Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million residents calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous research.

These hazardous conditions results in high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature mortalities annually in the city.
