Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials voiced anger after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and penalized "by death" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in military or security positions.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to safeguard and support this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Reply
The clip appeared to prompt a angry response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified statement denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our nation with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Officials' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a response.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who value this United States and took an oath to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it punishable by death for us to reiterate the law," they continued. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "Every American must join forces and censure the president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Governmental Responses
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government instructing troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is reacting to," the official stated. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who worked together to organize a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can result in chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
