Chornobyl Catastrophe Shelter No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Needs Significant Restoration – IAEA
The protective shield encasing the Chernobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine can no longer perform its main function of containing radioactive material, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This failure comes after a drone attack in February that blew a hole in the protective shell.
Structural Compromise from Aerial Attack Degrades Safety System
An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in February severely damaged the multibillion-euro “New Safe Confinement” arch. This massive shield, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was intended to seal off radioactive material for decades. An IAEA inspection last week confirmed that the strike had weakened the integrity of the steel confinement.
The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, stated IAEA head Rafael Grossi. He added that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to its load-bearing structures or monitoring systems.

The initial 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl plant – at a time when Ukraine was a republic within the USSR – released radioactive fallout across Europe. During a frantic response, Soviet engineers constructed a concrete shelter over the damaged reactor, though it possessed only a 30-year lifespan. The new confinement was erected to enable the future decommissioning of the old sarcophagus, the damaged reactor building, and the melted nuclear fuel itself.

Ukrainian authorities previously reported that a unmanned aircraft carrying a powerful explosive struck the plant, causing a fire and damaging the outer shielding.
