Per information released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have perished while in custody beginning in October 2023. A rights monitoring body located in Israel has indicated that the true number is probably substantially larger, due to hundreds of disappeared detainees originating in Gaza.

Recent Figures

Israeli defense forces most recently revised data on deaths in detention for May 2024, and the prison service during September 2024. Investigators identified a further 35 deaths in detention subsequent to these periods and confirmed them with Israeli authorities.

Despite the overall count of fatalities charted being much greater than earlier projections, it likely omits the entire scope of losses among Palestinians, according to the leader of the prisoners and detainees department.

“Even though we are providing evidence for a larger total of fatalities than earlier indicated, this is not the entire story,” he said. “We are sure that there are still detainees who perished in confinement that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Deaths

Confidential official information suggests that the largest portion of Palestinian prisoners from Gaza who died in detention were non-combatants, per a simultaneous examination.

In May of this year, a military intelligence database following all fighters in Gaza, a registry of in excess of 47,000 listed people, listed just 21 deaths in custody. By that date, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had perished in prison.

Prison Situation

Notable Incidents

Some deaths in confinement have been high profile, for instance a middle-aged hospital director who died in confinement after 120 days in custody.

A detainee incarcerated with the individual stated that he was led to the exercise area by correctional officers just prior to his passing, visibly injured and exposed from the hips downward. His body remains unreleased to Gaza.

Other prisoners who died in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. Detention administrators and armed services provided researchers with the number of deaths in custody, and minimal other details such as the location where they died, but excluding the prisoners’ names.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mostly people from Gaza, investigators were unable to correlate the limited information given by government bodies to a fatality documented by rights organisations, by means of accounts from released detainees or coverage in the press.

The inmates’ next of kin may not know about their loved ones’ deaths as well, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinians it is detaining. Over half a year at the outset of the hostilities, the Israeli military refused to give essential data about the status of many of people detained in Gaza, in effect implementing a policy of forced disappearance, per the human rights group.

Limited Transparency
